Empowering Youth in Skilled Trades

Making a difference, together

The "Empowering Trades: Skills Development Initiative" is a comprehensive program designed to enhance access to skilled trades training across various regions in Ontario, particularly for individuals from underserved communities, including youth, women, Indigenous peoples, and newcomers. This initiative addresses the significant skills gap in the Canadian labor market, focusing on skilled trades that are often inaccessible to marginalized groups. The project will involve providing training programs, certification support, mentorship, and apprenticeship opportunities, aiming to increase skilled trade certifications and improve employment prospects. By doing so, it contributes to closing the skills gap in the Canadian economy, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 10, which advocate for decent work, economic growth, and reduced inequalities. This initiative not only empowers participants with valuable skills but also provides a sustainable solution to labor market challenges, benefiting both individuals and the broader community.

Purpose of this Project

Empowering Youth in Skilled Trades

Supports SDG 8 and SDG 10

The "Empowering Trades: Skills Development Initiative" serves a dual purpose: fostering personal growth and community enrichment. By offering accessible skilled trades training, the program equips participants with practical, in-demand skills, paving the way for stable, well-paying jobs. This training not only elevates individuals' career prospects but also instills a sense of confidence and self-reliance. For communities, particularly those facing economic challenges, the initiative acts as a catalyst for socio-economic upliftment. By empowering individuals, the program indirectly strengthens community resilience, reduces poverty levels, and nurtures a skilled workforce, contributing to the overall economic health and social fabric of the regions served.

The Problem

The skilled trades sector in Canada is currently facing a critical shortage of trained professionals, which poses a significant challenge to the nation's labor market and economic growth. According to the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, Canada will need an estimated 122,380 new journeypersons by 2026 to maintain workforce certification levels across key trades. This demand is driven by workforce retirements and a decline in apprenticeship registrations and completions, which saw a 27% drop in new registrations in 2020, the lowest since 2000. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these issues, negatively impacting apprentice employment and training.Additionally, there is a growing need for advanced digital skills in the workplace. A significant portion of the Canadian workforce, including millennials and baby boomers, struggles with the digital skills required in today's job market. Critical gaps also exist in social and emotional skills like collaboration and problem-solving. To address these challenges, efforts are being made to encourage the hiring of underrepresented groups, such as women in trades, and to provide financial incentives and training support to employers. However, there's an increasing need for broader and more effective strategies to close these skill gaps and prepare the Canadian workforce for future demands
